RECREATION

Whether you like to play ball, drop a line in the water, bird watch, swim, or just take a leisurely stroll, Donalsonville and Seminole County is filled with a variety of recreational opportunities.

The Seminole County Recreation Department offers year round sports programs including baseball, softball, football, soccer, and basketball. All the programs are conducted at the Seminole County Recreation Complex, and features both league and tournament play for all ages. In addition to the ball programs, the complex has tennis courts, volleyball courts, playgrounds, and a walking track. Don't want to play? Spectators are always welcome at the Recreation Complex.

If it's golf you're interested in, the Donalsonville Country Club is the place for you. Featuring an award winning 18 hole golf course, the club welcomes public play, and has several tournaments throughout the year. The club also offers swimming and tennis.

Rated the fifth (5th) best bass fishing lake in the United States, Lake Seminole is a fisherman's paradise with hundreds of undiscovered inlets and coves. The deep and shallow waters of Lakes Seminole's 37,500 acres provide a fishing experience second to none. Hosting over 79 species of fish that include the lake's renowned largemouth bass, sizable population of stripes and hybrid bass can be found along side crappie, catfish, bream, and shell cracker. Lake Seminole has a legal netting season, the only location in inland Georgia where this is true. There is also a legal gator season. There are numerous public launches, campgrounds, marinas, specialty fishing stores, bait & tackle shops to assist you in making your fishing trip one to remember. A Georgia fishing license is required.

Surrounded by a 376 mile shoreline and extending 30 miles up the Chattahoochee River and 35 miles up the Flint River, Lake Seminole is a naturalist's haven for discovering flora, wildlife, geology, and natural history. Lake Seminole sings the song of a birder's dream. Over 295 species of birds have been sighted in the area, including the once endangered Bald Eagle and Osprey. Lake Seminole is located between the center of the Mississippi and Atlantic migration flyways. With a rich diversity of habitat, many birds make their winter sanctuary on the 22,000 acres of surrounding land.

Lake Seminole's numerous public launchings provide plenty of opportunity for boating, skiing, canoeing, and swimming activities. With abundant open waterways and public launchings, Lake Seminole is the place to let loose! Contact the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for boating license requirements and area rules and regulations.

Located on Lake Seminole, the 604 acre Seminole State Park offers many opportunities for fun and recreation. Recreational opportunities at the park include swimming, birding, boating, water skiing, miniature golf, and picnicking. The 2.2 mile Gopher Tortoise Nature trail leads past gopher tortoise burrows, a wetland boardwalk, and one of the largest Longleaf Pines forests in a Georgia State Park. Canoe rentals are available at the park.

Recreational fishing is offered at both Spring Creek Park Resort and Trails End Resort. Boat rentals are also available at Trails End Resort.

Fishing and picturesque scenery may also be enjoyed on the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers.

For hunting enthusiasts Seminole County offers many recreational opportunities. Abundant wildlife and quality hunting grounds surround Lake Seminole. Ducks, deer, turkey, dove, and quail are plentiful and challenging in this extraordinary habitat of lake, marsh, and land. Near the lake is the Lake Seminole Wildlife Management Area, considered a quality and professionally run public hunting ground. Contact the Georgia Wildlife Resource Division for information on all public hunting grounds, license and firearms regulations.
